A PLACE TO GATHER
We call it the “Main Lodge” because before it was constructed in 1993 we operated out of the “Old Lodge” for more than a decade.
The Main Lodge only took the Talaheim crew three months to construct, but that was after Mark spent three years cutting down and peeling enough logs in preparation. Everything you see in the Main Lodge was either built by hand from logs local to the area, or flown out by aircraft.
By “flown out” we mean either slung by helicopter– as was our tractor– or stuffed into the back of a beaver. Don’t believe us? Check out this video!
And while you’re at it, be sure to check out our video on building this historic site.
Today the Main Lodge acts as our primary gathering place for breakfast and dinners, both of which are served family style around our birch table.
It’s also a place where fishing stories swirl alongside the aroma of good food, and laughter and guitar music can be heard weekly. On a clear day you’ll also get a glimpse of North America’s highest peak, Mount Denali, from our very own porch.
The Main Lodge is also the only place on the Talaheim grounds where you’ll find Internet and get cell service. By choosing WiFi calling you can contact the folks back at home.
The internet is perfect to check emails, but not to stream movies. Not that you’ll want to, our stories around the dinner table are far more entertaining than anything you’ll find on TV.
